Balancing chakras with essential oils

January marks fresh starts and new beginnings. It’s that time of the year where you probably want to make some changes and see some dreams come to fruition  We all start off with good intentions and then life and work somehow gets in the way and these great ideas turn into failed dreams.

Kinesiology helps you clarify what it is you really want and remove the blocks that stop you from achieving your goals. One of my favourite tools to incorporate when clients are wanting to work through their goals are chakra balancing and essential oils. It’s a great way to clear sabotages, energise under active chakras, and bring the energy flow back in balance.

What are chakras?

Chakras are the energy centres in your body in which energy flows through. They plays an important role in helping us understand ourselves better by giving us messages to show us what we need to work on physically, mentally and emotionally. An unbalanced chakra, either blocked or too open can potentially create emotional pain, low energy or even physical illness.

How essential oils can help

Essential oils are great for clearing the emotional patterns which affect the chakras. Each chakra responds to different scents and can be brought back into balance by simply wearing an essential oil or by adding a few drops to your diffuser.

Here’s a quick guide on the 7 chakras and some of my favorite essential oils that can help restore your balance to your chakras:

Base Chakra

This chakra is located at the base of the spine. It contains all of your primal and survival needs - home, family and work. When it is balanced, you feel safe, secure and supported in moving forward  in your life. When you’re feeling stuck in your thoughts, anxious or insecure, seek connection to the earth by fully immersing yourself in nature. Concentrate on your breath and taking note of the sensation you feel each time your foot touches the ground.

Essential oil: Cedarwood, Patchouli

Sacral Chakra

This chakra is located beneath the belly button. It influences your creativity, emotions, inspiration, passion, sexuality and the ability to manifest abundance by dreaming up creative ideas for your life. When in balance, this chakra allows you to trust the flow of life and enjoy your achievements. You feel more comfortable with expressing your emotions and you do not get suppressed by other people’s power.  Balance out this chakra by doing something creative and spontaneous. Make art or dance the night away.

Essential oil: Jasmine, Orange

Solar Plexus Chakra

Located just below your rib cage, the solar plexus is the center of your personality as a physical being.  Its state of balance is directly correlated with your sense of willpower, self-acceptance and your ambition to succeed. A balanced solar plexus chakra will make you feel confident, focused and energised. Repeating simple affirmations like “I am worthy of the best in life” can help turn around the negative subconscious stories we tend to tell ourselves and boost our self-esteem.

Essential oil: Lemon, Rosemary

Heart Chakra

Located in the middle of our chest, the heart chakra is a powerful energetic centre that is the connection between the upper chakras and the lower chakras. This chakra is the centre of your emotional power. It oversees relationships and the ability to give and receive love. Try to find compassion and kindness for yourself daily so that it is possible to find it for others. An open heart chakra allows you to be empathetic to the feelings and emotions of others while remaining true and in tune with your own.

Essential oil: Rose, Geranium

Throat Chakra

Located in the middle of the throat. This chakra is all about communication and being able to express your truth unapologetically. Have the intention of always being open and honest with your communication. Try to keep communication meaningful, not indulging in gossip, lies and pointless chit chats. Allow yourself to share your feelings, thoughts and ideas.

Essential oil: Eucalyptus, Peppermint

Third Eye Chakra

This chakra is located at the centre of the forehead between the eyebrows. It governs our ability to focus and see the bigger picture. When in balance, we see life with clarity, possess strong intuition, self-awareness and emotional balance. Limiting core beliefs are often associated with this chakra. Core beliefs are the central convictions we have about ourselves which cause us to feel fear, insecurity and anger. Common core beliefs include “I am not worthy”, “I’m a bad person” and “I don’t deserve to be loved”. Try to see into situations rather than taking things at face value. Artistic pursuits, visual stimulation and art therapy are all things that can encourage a balanced third eye chakra.

Essential oil: Clary sage, Grapefruit

Crown Chakra

This chakra governs our spirituality. Located on top of your head, the crown chakra keeps you grounded in the present so you're not dwelling in the past or too focused on the future. It is associated with knowledge, consciousness, our feeling of "oneness" with the Universe and our spiritual wisdom. When this chakra is balanced, we are able to expand and open to a higher state of consciousness where we feel a sense of peace and purpose in all that we do. A great way to balance this chakra so you feel more open, receptive and clear about your higher purpose is to practice meditation and mindfulness exercises.

Essential oil: Frankincense, Sandalwood
